We thought we’d extend our post from last week and focus on some career advice from some of the most listened to inspirational voices out there. Finding a good job adds a lot of stability in our lives and it’s why we take it very seriously. There comes a time, however, in many people’s lives where they have been laid off or find themselves jobless and suddenly unsure of what road to take or how to find happiness.
Job Advice from a Well Known Job Guru
Mike Rowe offered this advice: “Stop looking for the “right” career and start looking for a job, any job. Focus on what’s available. Get yourself hired. Show up early. Stay late. Volunteer for the scut work. Become indispensable. You can always quit later, and be no worse than you are today. But don’t waste another year looking for a career that doesn’t exist. And most of all stop worrying about your happiness. Happiness does not come from any one job. It comes from knowing what you truly value, and behaving in a way that is consistent with those beliefs.”
Exploring What The “Right” Job Means
Many have criticized Rowe for his straightforward approach, but while not everyone might think this way, some might find something very valuable in what he’s saying. His words speak to the very real aspect that sometimes we have this idea job that might not actually exist and it is only by trying things and getting good at them that we improve and open up doors and opportunities. It might be that we have that “perfect” job and that perfect wish list, but that job might not exist in that exact form. So, begin by looking in a similar industry or focusing on what’s available that you consider an option for you.
The idea that a job provides your only happiness is a faulty one, as Rowe points out most of our happiness will come from what we truly value and cherish in life. Of course, finding joy and meaning in your work will certainly bring a sense of happiness and ease to your life.
More Job Talk With Famed Inspirational Speaker Tony Robbins
Tony Robbins is another well-known speaker who gives talks to full auditoriums of people wanting to hear the secrets to transforming their lives. He was given expert advice by his mentor who told him that building skills and shifting the focus from himself to what he could bring to the table, would be a real life changer. He has carried this advice since. So Robbin’s advice was simple enough: make yourself invaluable to the industry that could use you and learn the necessary skills to make this happen. Other advice Robbins gives is, “changing your mindset.” In other words, use bad situations to shift your mindset, take a new direction, and move forward. This might often land you a much more fulfilling job than you ever thought. Perhaps getting laid off was an opportunity to take a new path and shift your thinking.
